If you’re like me, you probably don’t think about breathing very often. Thankfully, it’s one of those necessary life-sustaining actions that our body does automatically. Without breathing, we’d die.
Most of us are taking shallow breaths, not filling our lungs up all the way, and ultimately getting only the minimum amount of oxygen that our bodies need to survive.
But deep breaths are where the magic happens. When we breathe deep, our lungs fill up completely with oxygen that is able to move quickly through our whole body. Our minds become clearer, and things around us seem to slow down a bit. We are able to get out of survival mode, and begin to thrive.
This is one of the most important lessons I’m learning so far in my recovery. I try to remind myself to breathe deep and be grateful for this moment. This beautiful magical moment in which I am alive, I am loved, and I am loving others.
“At this moment, you are seamlessly flowing with the cosmos. There is no difference between your breathing and the breathing of the rain forest, between your bloodstream and the world’s rivers, between your bones and the chalk cliffs of Dover.”
